FAQ:Ban

For various reasons, users may be banned from part or all of MangaDex. This entry is intended to provide information about the types of bans, and to help banned users identify which type of ban they have received and how to proceed. For information about situations other than bans which affect the ability of a user to access the website, please refer to the MangaDex Website Troubleshooting entry.

MangaDex shows "403: Temporarily Banned"

This is an automated ban, triggered by our servers receiving what they consider an excessive quantity of requests from your IP address. Note this is cumulative over all activity from your IP address, so multiple users on a single shared address (such as a communal living arrangement, a public wi-fi network, or a VPN endpoint) will all contribute to the measured traffic from that address. This ban will reset itself and begin to allow traffic again once 15 minutes have passed with no activity from the address. If possible, we recommend closing all tabs/windows you have open to MangaDex and waiting 15 minutes before returning to the site.

Some actions on the site may generate multiple requests, such as opening a chapter, which sends a set of requests to fetch multiple pages of content in order to provide a smoother reading experience. Opening many chapters simultaneously is a common cause of this ban. Your specific browser/plugins may also automatically trigger refresh requests for multiple MangaDex tabs at once. If you are seeing this ban frequently, we recommend closing unused tabs and checking your browser/plugin configurations for anything that may be causing unrequested or unintended refreshes.

Upload page shows "Unable to begin upload" or similar error

This is a moderator-applied ban specifically preventing the user from being able to upload chapters, and is given due to prior behavior which violated the terms and guidelines for site content. For information on the specific reason for the ban and to determine the possibility of the ban being lifted, FIRST review the rules and guidelines and attempt to determine what action(s) would have led to the ban. Then ask for assistance in the #support channel on the MangaDex Discord - provide your MangaDex username, state that you have received an upload ban, and be patient. You should receive a response within 24 hours.^[1]

MangaDex mainsite profile contains the role "Banned"

This is a moderator-applied ban preventing a user account from accessing the main MangaDex site, and is given due to repeatedly and/or flagrantly disregarding the terms and guidelines for site conduct and behavior. For information on the specific reason for the ban and to determine the possibility of the ban being lifted, FIRST review the rules and guidelines and attempt to determine what behavior(s) would have led to the ban. Then ask for assistance in the #support channel on the MangaDex Discord - provide your MangaDex username, state that you have received a mainsite ban, and be patient. You should receive a response within 24 hours. You will be expected to explain your behavior.^[1]

Forum shows "Oops! We ran into some problems" or similar error

Spam

If the message you see says "Spam", you have likely been caught in the automated spam filter. Message the #support channel on the MangaDex Discord - provide your username and that you have been banned from the forums for spam, and be patient. You should receive a response within 24 hours.^[1]

Other forum bans

Other messages are moderator-applied bans for repeatedly and/or flagrantly disregarding the terms and rules for site and forum conduct and behavior. Some bans are for a definite length of time, and will list the time at which the ban will be lifted. Others are indefinite/permanent. If you wish to contest your ban, FIRST review the rules and guidelines and attempt to determine what behavior(s) would have led to the ban. Then ask for assistance in the #support channel on the MangaDex Discord - provide your MangaDex username, state that you have received a forum ban, and be patient. You should receive a response within 24 hours. You will be expected to explain your behavior.^[1]

↑ ^1.0 ^1.1 ^1.2 ^1.3 Under some circumstances, responses may take longer than expected. Be aware that most of the MangaDex staff are volunteers. Abusive behavior toward the staff will generally result in your request being ignored and may result in you being banned from the Discord.
